Light Wind Kites

Light wind kitesurfing kites are becoming very popular thanks to huge leaps forward in kite design. Back in the early days before SLE kites were developed most of us had a 16m or bigger kite in our quiver for those 12-13 knots days. They were slow and a little limited but at least you got some water time. At Kitesurf Warehouse we even had a huge 28m kite that produced very floaty jumps but it was also a very slow beast that took forever to pump up and if the wind picked up you were going to be in trouble. Once SLE kites developed kiters quickly realised that with a good light wind board a 10 or 12m kite would get them out to play in those light wind days of 12-13 knots . It wasn't all that great but it got you on the water. Around 2010 kites made just for light winds such as the Blade Fat lady hit the market. They were big at around 17m but promised fast turns and kitesurfing from 8 knots and wind ranges up to 23knots and more, with epic sessions promised at anything over 11 knots. Most riders including us at KSW were very skeptical about this. But once we got our hands on one we were instantly converted. Now those light wind days turn out to be some of our best sessions and we rush down to the beach after work even when its only blowing 12 knots as nowadays if you have a good light wind specific kite even 8 knots can be kited.
